Obama Pushes New Gun Control Laws in 2013

Hey Naturalistas!
We all know about the tragedy that happened in Connecticut this month. Twenty children and seven adults gunned down in an elementary school.  Completely crazy and uncalled for to say the least. There are a lot of NRA members freaking out about Obama's proposal to create stricter gun laws in the U.S. but most would agree that after what happened we'd be complete and udder fools not to change something! I came across this article this morning!
Tell me what you think

My deepest apologies!

Hello Naturalistas,
This is my letter of apology to you all! I have been slacking so hard on my hair blog pimpin. My life has changed so much and not in the best of ways. I had to move back to Baltimore City with my father in his cramped apartment.  He seems to think that I should have stayed, but I am not going to stay where I am not wanted. So my mother kicked me and my children out and we moved back in with my dad. I was in a funk I will admit and the last thing I thought about was this blog. Please forgive me. I am ashamed bc lord knows that I love my hair, but bc I have been so depressed I wasnt taking care of my hair at all. I had to get and inch and a half of damage cut off last time I went to the salon one month ago. I was like oh no! I had to get outta my funk for myself, my children and MY HAIR's sake. So this is my vow to you all to never abandon you and K.I.T. bc I love you a11

Dr. J's Formula for Effective Listening!

Hello World!
As you all know I am a student as well as a mom and all that other stuff (LOL)
And I am taking Speech 204 or Critical Listening at CSU. I love this class and I love my professor. Her name is Dr. Wilner and she is too fabulous. Anyhoo, she introduced us to this new method called "Dr. J's Listening Formula and it looks like this:

S  (Sleep)
+
  N  (Nutrition)
+
  E  (Exercise)
+
  BP  (Body Position)
+
  CP  (Cognitive Purpose)
   EPL  (Effective Pre-Listening)

I mean c'mon! Is that not like so awesome. This woman is teaching that overall wellness will lead to you becoming a better listener. And once you learn to listen EFFECTIVELY you will be able to process information so much better. I like the sound of that! I know a feww men who should take this course (and some sistahs too truth be told).

Ok. So you're wondering "I know what sleep, nutrition and exercise mean, but WTH is Body Position and Cognitive Purpose???
Body Position is pretty much your posture and where you are physically in regards to whom or what ever you are listening to. And Cognitive Purpose is, well a lot more difficult to explain LOL
Let's break down these words:
Cognitive: basically is the process of acquiring knowledge or just like knowing stuff. And you know what purpose means and if you don't (retard cough cough xD) >>>Click Here<<<.
So what you need to do is knowingly create a goal (in Lamesn terms) and see it through. How simple is that??? But here is the kicker. You need to create a cognitive purpose for all the things at the very top of your mental "Priority List".  Say what??? You don't have one of those either...SMH  wooo chile!

This is my most recent cognitive purpose for my hardest class I am taking (ART 208 Life Drawing)
"Learn something new that I did not know before entering class, reflect on it and analyze how to apply it to everyday life."
I like to create a mental C.P. twice a week for things that I find to be challenging (like my art class). this helps me to maintain my mental composure and focus on a specific objective. Bc idk about you ,but when I think something is hard I sike myself out and then end up not doing so hot. This helps me to go into "the ring" with a target.  And it helps to write it in a journal or in my daily planner so I can look back over recent C.P.'s and keep going forward. I'm telling you there is something to this and I like it. maybe next I'll begin to create C.P.'s for my hair. hmmmmmmmmm

Dressing a full figured mom body xD

What can I say??? I am a plus sized woman and I am proud to say that! My constant uphill battle for weight loss is still ongoing, but in the mean time, I need to learn how to dress my thicker curves.  I will admit that although I have been 200 lbs.+ for at least a year  I am still not used to being so heavy, but I know with out a shadow of a doubt that I am still very desirable. I do not lack confidence in that, just time, energy and money to pull off THAT look, ya know? I have, however, been investigating new and inexpensive ways to dress my size 16 body with out looking "crazy".

Thrift, thrift, thrift!
Thrifting is a major way to find clothes you like and save a ton of money. But there is an art to shopping thrift! You must not be lazy when shopping in a thrift or consignment shop. It is an arduous and time consuming task but well worth it when you find that "one piece". I suggest you go in with an image of the outfit you want to create (realistically), or find a piece to compliment an existing outfit. Use
Google to find a thrift store near you!

Don't shop in places where everyone goes!
You ever walked past that store in the dark and gloomy section of the mall??? That place that looks so lonely??? LOL I have too and I've often wondered what was in there. Well go in! Go in and see what's in that shop. You may find something that you like for cheap or get inspired by a piece you've never seen before. Not to mention that this store is "special" lol so very few ppl are  likely to have your outfit or accessory! Talk about originality...

Mix and match!
Often you hear ppl say "Girl, I live in so and so store ..." like that is the only store in the world. And usually those ppl are fronting anyway smh, bc I don't know anyone who just shops in one store. I can shop in Lord and Taylor then go to Target and piece an outfit together like nobody's business. Plus adding a few expensive, key accessories to an inexpensive outfit can make the whole thing look more expensive and put together! Trust me it works...

Dress your body type and size!
Please please PLEASE!  Honey if you have DDD breasts and you're wearing a tube top (passes out) Lawd please spare us all. A nice scoop or V neck shirt with feminine designs will do. Just a hint of cleavage is ok. Listen to that little voice in your head! You know what I mean -evil look-  And if you have sizable hips and an even bigger bottom, DO NOT WEAR LEGGINGS W/O A SHIRT TO COVER YOUR BUM! Geesh, I cannot say that enough. Leggings leave nothing to the imagination and we don't want to give it all away do we? Let's be classy and cover that @$$y shall we? A peasant skirt, or maxi dress will do fine, even shorts! But as a plus sized girl with wide hips I realize that Bermuda Shorts are more flattering on my figure!

And I cannot stress enough how important it is to buy clothes that are YOUR size. Bellies jiggling, and things wobbling when you walk is nasty! No one thinks it is attractive! Trust me, even men who like big girls will tell you they like a woman who is well put together ( a respectable man anyways xD)
OH! and gurdle wouldn't hurt if you have that dreaded "pouch"`... you know what I'm talking about, that kangaroo pouch under your navel. Spanx are a wonderful invention! and if you don't have that kinda cash right now, JC Penny has a great collection of shapewear!

Here are some of my favorite sites for plus sized girls :)

Naptural85's BEST Twist Out Tutorial! A MUST SEE!

9-Year-Old Punches and Chokes Babies in Daycare Rampage

This video clip is truly disturbing... This is exactly why I would not send my children to a daycare center without sitting in and thoroughly researching the center and speaking with other parents. I was deeply disgusted with the behavior this particular child exhibited. I am not angry with the child, but angry at his parents and the daycare provider for being so irresponsible.
First of all, he is nine.....in a daycare! The cut off age is usually five which is school age, so why is he allowed to be in the room with the children alone???
Second, the children were crying! How come the worker did not respond to that??? Ad why was she on the phone and left the kids by themselves??? She deserved what she got!
Next, the fact that that man came and beat a child to retaliate ( the wrong child by the way ) is completely absurd and he deserved what he got as well.
AND finally, the boys aunt! ".....He's a normal child"???????? Are you crazy too?
This whole thing is beyond me but if I were those parents I would lawyer up and crush that daycare center under a sea of lawsuits. PERIOD
Then again, my hoodness may have attempted to kick some a** too... idk though #ijs

Love and Hip Hop

Ok,
So I have been neglecting my P.O.W's but I promise that I will make up for it! SWEAR! lol But latley when I have free time I noticed that instead of working out... (like I should be) I am watching more Tv than usual... Love and Hip Hop and True Blood and so on. Lawd! That Love and Hip Hop Atlanta is crazy!  I mean part of me wants to throw a shoe at the TV everytime I watch it bc these women of color are exploiting themselves....UGH! But one must admit that it is very enthralling and is a guilty pleasure for most of us. That or Single Ladies (my mom and sister watch it, I can't get into it).

BUT
I must speak on one thing! Stevie J must got that jangle-jangle bc those two ((cough) you know who) were fighting over his ass furiously...smh It couldn't be me! and on TV too smh I'm glad these two are retarded for my viewing pleasure... Exhibit A

Fall 2012

Hello Naturalistas!
Sorry I have been M.I.A. I have been working and getting ready for school child, yes! Going back to school with one child was difficult, but this double duty Momma act is all new to me. And yes, my BD is acting like a jerk so needless to say, I am not relying on him for child care or anything!   So I have been shopping for DayCare in our new area and trying to keep fit by walking here and there. It has been a struggle, but my babies are worth it! whew  Needless to say the blog has suffered and it hurts me to admit that but it has V_V. As you all know I aspire to make this blog a dot.com someday xD  and hopefully raise money so that I can have giveaways for loyal members and natural moms in need.

One thing I have found that helps me is (((DRUM ROLL)))  meditation!!!! (((INSERT APPLAUSE)))... I often sit alone, in a dim lit room and breathe deep. ahhhhhh Warning: this may lead to an unplanned nap! lol but it relaxes me and a power nap is good for an energy boost.
I must make another confession <.<   >.> ...... my hair is in disarray! I want so badly to be able to spend more time grooming it and styling it the way I am used to, but when I am not at work, I am home with an infant and a toddler, cooking and cleaning. I feel so guilty at at times for just pulling my hair back or putting it in a quick two french braid style! UGH
I must say that even though I haven't done much to it in the way of styles, my basic french braids are a good protective style! and I am doing better at wrapping my hair at night to keep it from breaking! So....yeah xD   I will post new pics next week! SEE YOU THEN!

New POW!!!! Check it out

5 Easy, Natural and COST EFFECTIVE Ways to Beat The Heat

Hey Natural Momma's!
I have just finished doing some research on how to beat the heat this summer! With thunder storms knocking out power (in Baltimore City) for days on end and the weather reaching crazy levels (95 degrees and hotter) its no wonder people are curious. Being a working mom of two, I have no time to concoct crazy, energy saving gadgets to cool my hot house. And blasting the air all summer long won't cut it either (Gas and Electric would be high as crap). So I've found some interesting articles online about natural and, most important, inexpensive ways to cool your domain.

They are as follows:

1. Sheild your windows! If your shades have light and sunny sun rays shinning through, and although natural light is scenic, light equals heat.
Find some opaque drapes and hang them up to block the sun and watch the temperature cool down by at least 5-10 degrees. It may be a little emo for a bit lol but it'll be a lot cooler.

2. Replenish your liquids! Water is the key to almost every ailment the human body may encounter. Drinking chilled water is a great way to cool the body from the inside out. Or if you have access to a pool or even just a bucket of water you can splash away the heat! (If you sweat profusely drink Gatorade to restore your electrolytes.)

Fruit Salad3.Try to eat light! Eating heavy meals is a great way to make you more sluggish when it's hot. After eating a meal, the digestive system draws blood from other areas of the body so that your intestines can successfully break down what you have ingested. One of those places from which the blood is drawn is the brain which causes you to feel sleepy. We know this as the "itis" lol  Eating a summer salad or a bowl of chopped fruit will provide you with extra Vitamin C and satisfy any hunger pangs without making your body work overtime.

4. Dress in light colors! Dark colors absorb light, while lighter colors reflect it, thus releflecting the heat as well. 'Why' you ask? Well the explanation is sorta complicated and loooong but you can find it >>>here<<<. But trust me on this one! Lighter colors in the summer equals cooler temperatures.

5. Fans in the window! If you have multiple windows in one room, place one fan in each. One blowing in and the other blowing out. Or if you only have one fan place that fan in the window blowing out to create the same effect (picture on the left). This will create a flow of air through the room. Fresh air blowing in and the fan will suck out any old, stale air. Think of it as a large scale venting system.
(the picture is from an artists website depicting ways to air out a studio after using potentially toxic chemicals but its the same idea lol)

15th Annual Taliah Waajid World Natural Hair Show

Hey there Naturalistas!

My mom is the best y'all. She just handed me this bomb.com flyer for something called the 15th Annual Taliah Waajid Presents: WORLD Natural Hair Health and Beauty Show! I am so excited. The flyer is wonderful and has a beautiful model on the front of it rocking her natural curls! I love it. The moment I saw the flyer I wanted to attend! But here's the bummer, IT'S IN GEORGIA! <cry> I was like awww mannnn! But then I got to thinkin, maybe this could be a project for me! Maybe I can raise the money to go and document the whole experience for my naturalistas! This would be huge! My first real Natural Hair Convention and its a big one! Now I did some research on Miss Waajid and she has been in the game for a minute. Even though I have never seen her products on any shelves in MD I am very interested in trying them out for our P.O.W. (Product Of the Week)! I am now follwing her on twitter and I like what I see! Go visit the website "http://www.naturalhairshow.org/" and see what I mean or go to "http://www.naturalhair.org/" to see what Miss Taliah and the gang are cooking up over at Black Earth Products!

Updates will come as I receive them, but you can bet ya bottom dollar that this sistah is going to be on her grind to attend that fabulous show!

Baby Center's Article for caring for an AA Childs Hair

(M.J. at 4 mos. old)

I am an active member of Babycenter.com which is a wonderful and vast online community for moms of all sorts. It has advice and forums from conception to bigkid status and everything in between. It's the first stop I make online when I have any questions about almost anything regarding my infant or toddler.  I ADORE IT! I used their Pregnancy App to countdown the days before the delivery of my son and to keep track of his development. Its a great app to go along with a great website! I recently stumbled upon this article while updating my daughters information. I was just curious and typed in "hair care for AA babies". This is what I got! Read it and tell me what you think!!!

Hey Naturalistas!
Now that I have decided to move the site in another direction (all Natural living, not just hair care), I am glad to announce that I will be posting a new tab and deleting two. The Hair "Sis"tory tab and the HNNY members tab are NO MORE! lol I felt that these tabs were a bit superfluous. I am, however, adding new tabs called "Product of the Week" and "Naturalista of the Month". These two tabs will be fierce! lol
The 'Product of the Week" tab will include new products that I have reviewed myself! They will included pics of the product and sometimes before and after pics of my hair, as well as a brief critique of the experience. Now these wont all be hair products...some will be body oils or soaps or natural foods and supplements! I love doing this. This gives me an excuse to BAT (Buy and Try) new natural/organic products. Yay! xD
Now the "Naturalista of the Week" tab has me all excited! I will be personally interviewing natural women like you and I, from all walks of life. They will be moms, CEOs, students, teachers you name it! I will be asking five basic questions:
1. When did you first transition? Why?
2. What is your HCR (Hair Care Regimen)?
3. What's your favorite product(s)?Why?
4. Who inspires you?
5. Freebie Question....this is an opportunity for the interviewee to vent about anything regarding being natural bc they'll get to choose thier own question! WOOO I know this will be interestingggggg....mhhmmm

The first installment will be next month... but bc its the very first entry I will be posting two Naturlalistas! Looking forward to posting. Thanks y'all

MJ's Hair Care Regimen

All of the products we use are listed in the previous blog entry... I like to give MJ a bath and wash her hair while she lays flat, other wise its a complete mess lol

 1. Gather your materials close by and keep a spare wash cloth to wipe away any run away suds that may get too close to your child's eyes, ears or nose. You'll need your shampoo and conditioner, a comb, towel, ponytail holders and any oils or balms for extra conditioning when styling.

 2. Use a cup or small bucket to rinse your child's hair and let it "soak" for about ten minutes. This is to ensure that the water moisturizes and penetrates the hair shaft.
<<<MJ before wetting her hair

 3. Use ur shampoo of choice (ours is Shea Moisture) and apply to wet hair. Bc our shampoo is sulfate free it doesn't lather much. But to ensure the product is cleansing the scalp as well as the hair, use a wide toothed comb to gently massage the scalp and comb through to de-tangle. Rinse and repeat depending on how "dirty" your child's hair is. No shame lol they're kids...they are born to get dirty it seems ;)

 4. I lay my daughter flat in the tub and cradle her head in my forearm while pouring cup fulls of water over her hair until I feel it is clean and free of excess product. Also bc I feel that she feels safer this way bc she can see me. We all know that some kids are scared to get their hair washed so this step can be modified depending on your child's comfort level.

5. After thoroughly rinsing my LO's (little one) hair we let out the water then wash up and get out. I usually wrap her hair in a towel for about 20 minutes but this particular time it was close to bed time. So I modified her drying process by wringing her locks in small sections in the towel.    6. I part her hair in four sections after drying as much as possible. And use the Shea Moisture Conditioning Masque as a leave-in for her hair. I only use a small amount (dime sized) and work it through the hair root to tip.

7. Then I comb it through that section of hair for extra de-tangling then double strand twist it. Then wrap the twist around itself (depicted above) creating a Bantu Knot. (SEE MY HAIR CARE REGIMEN FOR REFERENCE). I secure the knot with a thin ponytail holder.

8.Repeat steps 6-7 for the other remaining three sections.

9.Place a satin cap or scarf on your child's head and send them to bed! lol

 10. The next day: Take off scarf, if its not already on the floor from your LO sleeping all wild, then take out the knots and comb through it. Notice the manageability and shine! Oil their scalp/hair (we use Doo Gro Oil for the scalp and Shea Moisture Hair Milk for the hair) and style as usual. :) Enjoy!

<<<The Result :) BEAUTIFUL

Happy Mother's Day

Even though this blog is relatively new I am so glad that I have this outlet to express my love for being who I am and for my fellow natural sisters. There is no better feeling than waking up and seeing the smiling faces of my babies. To them I am super woman, all the imperfections (LOL and there are many) that me and others may see, they don't... they have become the reason I do anything worth doing in my life. Even though I have made questionable decisions about who their fathers so happen to be, I am not resentful bc from those relationships came my children who I wouldn't trade for absolutely ANYTHING. I would give my life for my babies and without them I am a selfish shell of myself, empty. Here's to all my naturalistas that are mothers or moms-to-be! HAPPY MOTHER'S DAY =]

Coming soon!

Coming in the next week (or so) [emphasis on OR SO] I will be adding two new tabs to the page. They will be (((DRUMROLL))) Naturalista of the Week and Product of the Week! Lol Ta-daaa! The Naturalista tab will include a new post every week of a celebrity who rocks their locks all naturale. As well as a brief bio of their work and hair care journey. The Product tab will include pics of popular natural hair care products that meet my standard of "natural". This means no sulfates, no parabens, no mineral oils, ceteryl alcohol...yeah, pretty much all the horrible additives we have come to despise lol Look out for the first installment this coming weekend!

No time for fake ones!

Ok... So since I am now a mother of two babies, needless to say, alot of things have been modified. My meals, traveling, chores, activities, and yes my hair care regimen. I now have less then half the time I used to have now that my "child load" (lol) has doubled. So I am finding that I want better products that will make up for the lack of time. I subscribe to Naptural85 on YouTube and she is freaking awesome. She was on a journey to find and all natural shampoo a few months back and after going through a couple, she found Terressentials. I am very interested in trying it because it is completely organic and after looking up it's reviews, which were almost 100% YES, I'd like to give it a go. I will be buying it online tomorrow and when it comes I will post pictures of the "hair detox" phase and before and after pics. Can't wait!

I'm baaaaaaack lol

Hello all! I have been M.I.A. for about a month now due to the birth of my little one. But I promise now that I am post-pardum this blog will get a major overhaul. Noah Myles was born on March 5th, weighing 6 lbs. 6 oz. I have maintained my natural hair and my sanity being a single mother of two small children. My life is changing very quickly and now I have two people as passengers. I must say I am not with out a very real sense of realness. Although I am optimistic about the future and things to come, I know that this will be hard. I know that now, being responsible for two separate children, one male, one female, will have it's separate problems and challenges. Along with the everyday issues life is bound to throw my way, add another baby, no job, no house and no degree (yet). Nonetheless I have strapped on my big girl boots and packed my survival bag. Looking for a job, revamping my resume, breastfeeding, co-washing while diapering one child and potty training the other. I definitely have my hands full, but all good things are worth fighting for. So while I maintain my tresses I will work to make life better for my children and myself and I will document it every step of the way :)

Preggo and Natural 2

Ok...-sigh- lol Having (and maintaining) natural hair has it's own challenges, alongside the other everyday challenges in life (school, work, children, and so on).  I have already been natural for going on four years and already having one child, my hair has suffered a great deal.  Lack of time and just being plain old tired means that one of the last things I worry about is my hair.  Just recently though I have become more aware of the need to take better care of my hair. My daughter is now almost 2 1/2 and has become more independent leaving me with extra time to pamper myself when she is either at daycare or playing nicely in her room.  But that is all about to change.

You see I am pregnant...........again! lol 36 weeks already actually and definitely huge, the elastic on my maternity pants is getting tighter by the day. Although I am not ecstatic about gaining more weight I am happy to be having a little boy!!! His name is Noah Miles and he's due next month. He doesn't have the same father as my daughter, but that is more of a blessing than anything else, trust me! (That may be T.M.I. but I am a candid person :) )

So I am huge and tired. Check and check. And since finding out I was preggo again I tried not to let it affect my grooming rituals and habits. WRONG!!! I usually do twist outs or braid outs but honey lemme tell you, hard it's been just getting up in the morning, literally rolling outta bed! So then some days (when I don't have any pressing appointments) I'm huge, tired and nappy headed. With school starting I some how knew this would take a bigger toll on my body.  But who knew that the motivation to "do better" would come from a critical listening course? My Professor suggested that part of listening effectively starts with proper sleep, nutrition, cognitive purpose, body composition, and exercise. O_O did some one say EUREKA!!!

I started another preggo yoga class and started going to bed earlier. The extra exercise helped a little but the sleep is what kick started everything (when the baby isn't keeping me up playing soccer in my belly or when heartburn isn't burning a whole in my chest). The extra energy helped me to be more focused and make better decisions as far as snacks were concerned. Then by the end of the day I could pre-style my hair CORRECTLY with our cutting corners bc of being overly drained. All in all, I've sorta found my nitch being a mother of 1.5 children (lol) and so far am sure I will be able to keep it up after he baby is born. We shall see, we shall see =)

Being Preggo and Natural

I must say ladies it's hard being natural and -clears throat- "healthy", but even more so preggers.
I find that I get a lot of compliments on my natural hair from non-naturals.  And since I have become pregnant again, I feel the need to take better care of my hair bc it's growing much quicker.  However, I have noticed a texture change in my hair.  I used to get it straightened a lot, but as we all know, that is a big
NO NO
... So slowly but surely I am getting my natural texture back and cutting off the dead ends that had been straightened to death, literally.  I have found that consistently moisturizing my hair and not combing it "dry" is helping.

But I wonder if anyone else has any tips:)

"Nappy" NEW YEAR

Hey all!
Like the title...lol it's just a play on words, but the truth is not all of us natural sisters technically have a "nappy" grain of hair.  I know a few Naturalistas who have soft, curly hair or thin, straight hair... The point is natural, in my opinion, is always best. T
And as you know natural to me just simply means wearing your hair that grows out of YOUR own head, relaxed or not. As we continue to make strides in hair image in our community it is important that we practice what we preach...

I know that alot of natural sistahs wear protective styling and put weaves or extensions in their heads... To me this is counter productive! what do you think???
