Family Movie Night IV: The Lorax

Hey there ppl,

This post update is coming a little over a week later, but here it is nonetheless people!
I planned to watch Disney's The Hunchback of Notre Dame, but I think that particular Disney classic did not hold the interest of my children.  Keep in mind they are one and three, and I think the overall tone and subject matter is a bit too mature for them right now. They got maybe 10 minutes into the film and wanted to do something else! So we watched a family favorite! Dr. Seuss' "The Lorax".

I know you have heard about this movie and may have seen it for yourself. I personally love the cast PLUS the colors and animation hold the attention of a busy 16 month old and an inquisitive three year old. (The cast includes: Ed Helms, Danny DeVito, Betty White and Taylor Swift) This film is close to my heart. It touches on so much, idk where to begin.

(inhales deep) Lemme see......:
social acceptance, fulfilling your dreams, motivation, bad association, the earth and the trees/ecosystem, greed, doing what's right and most of all doing what's best for everyone not just yourself, or in one word "selflessness"... (exhales)

There's so much more really, but overall the movie is about the trees. Saving them and it shows how the world will someday need to buy air! Can you imagine? Actually having to BUY air? I mean, if you think about it, it's not really that far fetched you know. I have no doubt that with the condition the earth is in and the rate at which we are depleting natural resources and the polar caps are melting and everything else you could name, we will need to buy air sooner rather than later. Its very scary, but not unrealistic, I must confess. Movies like this are sorely needed, in a world where what you have on is essentially much more important than your green thumb.

What do you think?
What movies have you watched with your little ones???
Comments def welcome :D

Naturalista ShoutOut III: Jill Scott

SUUUUUUP! lol

I can only start by saying that I love this woman's work so much, that I resemble her! LOL, jk but seriously people say we look alike. What do you think? Check out my post about this from a couple of weeks ago ;)

Miss Jill Scott has been laying down tracks for the last fifteen years as an independent and major label artist. Her struggles with her weight were not in the forefront of her life, but BOY! did we notice that weight-loss honey! YASSSSS -three snaps- , and she graces the covers of many major magazines here and there rocking her curves and natural hair. Although she gets it flat-ironed more now, we all know that Miss Scott has had the 'fro since way back when she was singing'  "Let's take a long walk...."

(looks for the song on my iPad 2 lol)

Man I tell you this diva's resume is long and she has talent to spare. Acting, producing, philanthropy and of course her soulful music that will always and forever remain on my playlist! I can go on and on but the proof is in the pudding ladies and gentlemen... Check out some of my favorite recent pics of the phenomenal Miss JILL SCOTT!

Slim and fierce!

Natural glow!

Rockin the pomp before the weight-loss...

Afro-licious!

 Stylish and Sophisticated...

A Single Mother's Blues (An Original Poem)

A Single Mother's Blues

ALARM CLOCK!
I'm still tired from the day before
Kids are up, breakfast
My babies, my strength, my reasons for life and love
Get dressed, clothes are nice but no man to get my son dressed
My daughter has never seen a man shaving in the sink
My son will only have me to teach him how to pee
Daycare, after getting off the bus, walking... walking... walking...

School, still tired from the day before, no money to buy lunch gotta get diapers
Leaning on my arm trying to catch some Z's in class
Busted! Professor calls me out, I'm up, I'm up
Homework, computer lab, lost track of time
Now its time to get the kids, running late...DAMN!

Hot bus, Daycare, late fee, my last 20 dollars 'til pay day... no diapers 'til then
Sideways looks from other women who have men at home waiting for them
They found good men and did everything right, not me smh, feels my eyes well up...
No time for that now!!!!
No help to get the coats on, no one to help carry the stroller and bags
Struggle onto the bus, back home walking.... walking.... walking....

Dinner, kids are hungry
The baby needs diapers, stretch the last few for one more day, stuck
My little one is smart and asks many questions, when will she ask about her father?  Idk
Worries, aches, longs, headache, back pain, tears on a hard pillow
Homework, read to the babies, teach them ABC's 123's
Baths, lotion, night clothes, Bedtime for them... Me, work

The graveyard shift, up all night still tired from the day before
Drifting, falling asleep standing up, Busted! Boss yells my name, I'm up, I'm up
Bills, due next week, savings almost gone bc last month the fridge broke
Zombie, walking home from the bus stop
Sad, confused, lonely, heartbroken, tired and down

Lays down....
45 min later.......

 ALARM CLOCK!

SIDE NOTE:((( I hope you guys enjoyed this piece... It was written at a moment when I was crying, this is how I felt. I love my children more than anything in the ENTIRE world and this poem is not to bash my life as a mom, but more like a venting session. I hope that people won't judge too harshly when they read it. Thank you! Comments below  =) )))

Family Movie Night: Mulan

Hey family!

This is the third installment of this little thing I like to call Family Movie Night. The past few days have been unbearably hot so I have not taken the kids out much at all. We have been watching movies on Netflix :). I use my dad's Netflix account like a bandit LOL! I need to get my own, but any hoo LOL

In this edition I will reviewing a Disney classic, Mulan.
Most of us are of age and have seen most, if not all of Disney's major motion picture classics, whether animated or live. I love such classics as Beauty and The Beast, Jungle Book,  The Aristocats, the Humpback of Notre Dame, The Lion King,  Pocahontas, I could go on and on!

Two days ago me and the kiddies watched "Mulan".  My three year old daughter sat trough the whole thing and was very intrigued. She asked, "Mommy is Mulan like Kai-lan?" (a Chinese character similar to the Hispanic character Dora in the sense that they introduce children to their culture and language).  I smiled and looked down at her and said "Yes, they are both from China."
I am so proud of my little girl, she is so bright and extremely sweet. My son, the one year old, just jumped on my bed and climbed all over me as we watched the movie. LOL

Mulan is a special movie, bc although it does perpetuate some stereotypes about Chinese culture, it is also very accurate in the depiction of life in China back when The Hans were trying to conquer the land.  Also.......I love the songs :)lol

Side note:
That's the one thing I miss most about older Disney movies,  the songs they used to put in the films... (((sigh)))

Anyhoo, such songs as "My Reflection" and "I'll Make A Man Outta You" have stuck with me into adulthood.  And its a whole lot batter than some of the other music our children are being exposed to. Mulan serves up laughter at the hands of Eddie Murphy as Mulan's guardian "Mu-shu".
The cast is full of Asian actors and actresses as the voices include:

Ming Na-Wen            George Takei            Pat Morita              James Hong
as Fa Mulan             as Ancestor Fa        as The Emperor          as Chi-fu

This is great Disney Classic and I can't wait to introduce my children to more of them!
Next week it's The Hunchback Of Notre Dame!

(Image Belongs to HNNY)

Its kinda funky yet simple... Very easy to do:
1. Wet your hair and apply your favorite product(s)
2. Part your hair with a comb and pin your hair in place about an inch away from the part (depending on hair length)
ALL DONE!

I found some pics on Google Images of celebrities rocking similar styles!

What do you think??? What are some of your fav styles for TWA???

Eating Clean: 7 Easy Steps to a "Greener" Diet

Why Hello there!
LOL xD

I was surfing the web the other day and came upon an article written by a good friend of mine.  He was talking about how eating healthier has changed his health and his waist line. I definitely could sympathize and empathize with him. Due to my injury I cannot really exercise extensively, but eating better makes me feel so sooo much better. I mean I have energy, I feel brighter, my skin has changed, and not to mention I am more regular (TMI? sry) lol I mean it is what it is.

I have broken my system into 7 steps. Check them out:

1. Eat ONLY when you're hungry.

This can possibly be one of the hardest things for me. I have "Snacker" syndrome. LOL  There have many  times when I was bored and I just ate for the heck of it. That needed to stop, bc I was taking in so many calories that no matter how hard I worked out I didn't see any progress. Now that I am housebound with a broken ankle its almost impossible to workout the way I am used to so I had to get a grip on my calorie intake. Part of eating better meant eating proper portion sizes only when I was actually hungry! #teamwillpower

2. Buy fresh and/or organic.

Most moms would tell you that its far more expensive to buy fresh, organic foods for your family. I am not gonna lie, its very true. Unless you buy direct from the source, you are gonna pay more. Its something that bothers me a great deal, but our government makes it easier for us to do worst, down to our diets.  Yes girl,  a bag of fresh, frozen veggies cost twice as much as a can of processed, canned vegetables. "How can you afford to feed your family better?", you ask. You MUST budget. It is very important to budget! If you're anything like me you want to look nice and have nice things, but think about it. Would you rather your child have in top of the line clothes and a belly full of processed foods with almost no nutritional value??? Ummmm no! Figure out what you can do without or have less of in order to spend those couple of extra dollars on better food. I guess you just have to ask yourself (like I did), what you are willing to change in order to pursue healthier living.

SIDENOTE: Try searching for a local farmers market online. If you live in the DC, Maryland and Virginia tri-state are look here!

3. Eat a simple salad before every meal.

Eating salad before a large meal can definitely curve your appetite. And I do not mean a salad loaded down with fatty dressing and bacon bits and huge chunks of meat. I mean a simple salad (recipes on FoodNetwork.com) Also a simple salad with vitamin-rich lettuce is a great way to get extra servings of veggies in your diet.
SIDENOTE: Now the misconception is that Iceberg lettuce is the best lettuce for a salad.  Sorry but this is a myth!  The nutritional value in Iceberg lettuce pales in comparison to, say Arugula or Romain lettuce.  Plus if you use mayonnaise based dressings (Creamy Caesar, Ranch, Bleu Cheese, etc) it really does defeat the purpose of eating a salad. The extra calories and saturated fats in these creamy dressings are undeniable. So try to back away from the fatty dressings and pick up some Spinach leaf for your salad. You can find great, light salad recipes on WomensHealth.com.

4. Replace frying with baking or broiling.

Its hard for some of us to put down the frying pan, and back away from the deep fryer. Especially those of us who are from the south. "Soul Food" cooking is an important part of African American culture.  Although these foods are delicious they are essentially full of saturated fats and sugar and loads of salt. No one is blaming good ol' soul food for the reason millions of African Americans are Diabetic or suffering from obesity, but with the "clean your plate" mentality its not hard to see why this way of eating and thinking is a concern. Who says that you cannot have these things? No one is saying that, instead of using lard, or canola oil or vegetable oil to fry something, you can bake it or pan sear it. I love salmon and I used to buy canned salmon to make breaded salmon cakes often. I've found that buying whole salmon filets and baking it is much healthier and is less time consuming. When I used to fry them I needed to stay over the pan monitoring them and flipping them to be evenly cooked, whereas if I season the filets to taste and put them in a covered baking pan, its easier for me to multi-task. Healthier food and easier to prepare??? Sign me up!

5. Instead of sugar use fruit or honey to sweeten your food.

This one, I admit, is still a struggle for me. I love my sweets! I am a certified cookie and chocolate fiend! LOL I have cut back though. Actually, this week I have only had low calorie ice-cream as my go to sweet-treat.  I've adopted using more honey in my dishes and beverages, however. For example: I have not used sugar in my hot tea for months now, but the distinct taste of honey can taste a little funny in other foods. You have to try it for yourself and figure out what combinations of what goes better with honey.  Not to mention, most of the sugar we consume is enriched, granulated sugar and all natural honey has loads of antioxidants the body needs. Also I use fresh fruit to sweeten my oatmeal and Iced Teas. Give it a shot, find what you like and incorporate it into your diet! The benefits are immense, I've found an article by Dr. Oz check with some fun facts about the benefits of choosing honey.

6. Cut back on salts and saturated fats.

This one is self explanatory.  Salt (sodium) drives up your blood pressure, makes you retain water and dehydrates you! Some very easy ways to cut back on fat and sodium intake is simply looking at the label when you purchase something. Most brands now provide a healthier alternative as well as their original product. You'd be surprised how many! Look for such clues as: Low-Fat, Low-Sodium, Low-Carb or No-Fat, etc., etc.  Compare the numbers on the nutrition label with that of your normal selection and go with what's better for your nutritional needs.

7. Last but not least...Drink plenty of water.

Water is the alpha and omega to healthy living. Tapped water or bottled is the question. My answer is filtered water. Most bottled water is not free of fluoride deposits, as well have come to learn fluoride may be linked to cancer and many other health issues. I have done my research and it is very disturbing!  The best way to get rid of the fluoride on your water is to purchase a water filter specialized for this and/or purchase Spring Water. Most spring waters have very low fluoride content, I've read this article about ways to really reduce your fluoride intake.

Why I DON'T "Co-Wash"...

Ok!

So, I know that this is a touchy subject!
A couple of years ago I began co-washing, and I noticed that there was always build up in my hair later. SOOOO, I figured it was me! Like, maybe I wasn't scrubbing hard enough and the conditioner I was using was too heavy. I started using all natural oils and as close as I could get to organic shampoos and conditioners.  Then I started to see products that made co-washes and I was hooked. Then I noticed that after a good scrub/detangling session I would still have build up. UGH!

I have done everything.  I used to part my hair in sections, detangle then scrub my scalp and rinse for like 10 minutes getting out any extra product and dead hair. Still nothing but residue. I realized that shampoo is made for washing, not conditioner. I know that sounds silly but its true. Who made us think that washing your hair with conditioner was going to "clean" you hair??? I mean the science behind it is kinda ridiculous. Really,  there are plenty of things that can clean your hair and scalp that won't leave residue, whether that product is "all natural" or free of mineral oil, sulfates and parabens is another issue all together.

I have found some products work great for my hair grain but don't help my scalp health and vice-versa. I find that only all natural, I mean so natural you can eat it, products like essential oils and Shea Butter are the only things that really work for me. I currently use Kera Care's natural line. The moisturizing cleansing crème is what I use to wash my hair, then  I use Cantu Shea Butter's Leave-In Conditioner. Before my hair dries I mix a little of coconut oil with a small dab of tea tree oil, very little peppermint oil and olive oil together and apply to my scalp. I love the way the peppermint oil smells and tingles. I make sure to massage my scalp to stimulate the hair follicles and rub the oils down my hair shaft as well. Check out my updated TWA Regimen.

What do you think? Do you co-wash??? What's your take on the whole process??? Comments welcome :)

Naturalista ShoutOut II: Raven-Symone

This young powerhouse child-star turned natural diva needs no intro. We all remember little Olivia, a pivotal child TV role played by Miss Raven-Symone when she was just three! She has set the bar high for any child star along with the likes of million dollar princesses The Olsen Twins (whom I also love.) Miss Thang is still racking in the c-notes with her movie empire, making over record ratings with her show "That's So Raven". Although, Raven has been out of the spotlight lately focusing on her family, she still has not left for good and is still a major name in Tinsel Town.

'Fro Woes: First Edition

Hello feminine creatures! lol
Welcome to AFRO WOES a.k.a. 'Fro Woes. This is my second contribution to the site and I am excited. What is a " 'Fro Woe" you ask??? Well, simply put it's a hardship in dealing with natural hair.  Every so often, I will post a new question about the challenges dealing with natural, transitioned, or texturized hair. That's right! When it all comes down to it, hair is the name of the game, but not just hair, hair problems more or less.

In this first edition we explore this question asked by Alyssa Johnson of Coppin State University in Baltimore, MD :

Q:
"My hair is very dry. It seems to absorb oil overnight lol... What can I do to retain moisture through out the week?"

A:
Well, you can definitely do hot oil treatments. I recommend using all natural products. Olive oil for coarse hair, avocado oil as well, coconut oil too. There really is a difference in how much your hair absorbs oil. If all the products we use are watered down , then we are not really getting the full benefits of that product. I also like Castor oil which is great for your scalp. Deep conditioning with these oils replace any harm done to the hair by using drying shampoos and harsh products with sulfates and alcohols.

There's certain natural oils and then you can use Shea Butter as well. Look out for yellow Shea Butter made in Ghana to assure its authenticity. Most Shea Butter products are white due to the "refining" process. Lighter colored Shea Butter is not as potent as it in its raw form (deep yellowish color). When properly used Shea Butter coats and protects the hair follicle and seals in lots of moisture.

Also water is your friend. Properly wash your hair and scalp to rid it of any dirt and buildup also massage your scalp to increase circulation to the hair follicle.

Hope this helps:) Do you have any tips for Miss Alyssa??? Post below, Thanks!

Zimmerman Found NOT GUILTY!

Were you sitting at the television like I was, stunned at what I was seeing?
Yes ladies and gentlemen, George Zimmerman was found "NOT GUILTY" in a trial that shook the modern world.

In case you have been under a rock, Trayvon Martin, a young African American teen aged boy in Florida was walking home with a can of tea and a package of skittles. He just so happen to be wearing a black hoodie pulled over his head. George Zimmerman, a white, middle aged man was on neighborhood watch at the time when Trayvon walked passed him on his way to his family's house. It was dark and Zimmerman automatically mistook Trayvon for a delinquent and proceeded to follow him.  There was some sort of scuffle and Trayvon was shot to death by Zimmerman.
This is where it gets fuzzy.  Zimmerman says he was defending himself, but others would say that Zimmerman was harassing young Trayvon and he was defending himself. "Why did young Trayvon have to die???", is a question we will forever ponder.

In this day and age, in a country so "forward thinking" as the U.S.A. one would think that racial tension is something of the past.  We like to believe that hundreds of years after slavery, well over 125 years after the Emancipation Proclamation and fifty years after Martin Luther King and Malcolm X walked the planet, that racism and prejudice would've at least simmered down some.  It is my opinion this day, in the wake of such an obviously lopsided decision, that racism is here to stay. As long as people are different, there will be a select few in that collective who harbor ill feelings toward another person, simply because of the way they look. SMH.

I believe it is a choice, however. If you are a racist in this world of technology and in the age of education and knowledge, it is DEFINITELY by choice.  I am just so incredibly saddened by this verdict and at the same time not surprised. In America, the only people who can get in trouble for killing a black man is another black man. HARSH, but the reality is so true. WAKE UP PEOPLE, know your surroundings. Know who you are dealing with and what the consequences are.

My son, a little black boy in the Unites States is already an endangered species. He is going to be targeted for any and everything, especially bc he is black. I know this. It is not a suspicion or a biased opinion, it is what it is. I have been on both sides of the bridge and have seen the green grass and the muddy holes. I know what's out there and have seen first hand how the justice system screws over black men. It is up to us to educate our youth and ourselves first and foremost! Teaching your child about the realities of the world they live in is utmost in this society which is constantly contradicting itself when it comes to the Judicial System and its involvement with urban youth.

White or black, wrong is wrong and Zimmerman was wrong. PERIOD!
What are your feelings about the Martin/Zimmerman case verdict??? Please share...

Tracee Ellis Ross' "Hair Love!" Video: Hit or Miss???

Hey guys!

SOOOOOOOO.... I follow the beautiful miss Tracee Ellis Ross on IG. I love her posts and recently I learned from a curl-friend that she is doing some sort of natural hair campaign! WHAT! Where do I sign up! I went to YouTube and searched this and sure enough there was her video! In it she talks about her struggles with learning to accept her massive hair. I can definitely relate to many of the things she said including the part about her "self esteem" issues regarding her hair. I had a lot of issues with my natural hair at first, but then I realized that its about accepting myself, my whole self. What do you think about the video? Will you post a response? I am in the process of editing a vid to post on here as well as on YouTube.
Check out the original post below and comment! :-)

Family Movie Night: Despicable Me 2

Hey People!

This is the second installment of this great thing we call movie night! Yes we are keeping the tradition going in my family with my kids! Last Saturday afternoon we saw Despicable Me 2!

So funny, lemme tell you!  These movies are really chuckle-worthy and I love it! My three year old, MJ, was fully engaged and enjoyed the movie! But my son is sixteen months! Ummmmm...yeah lol Let's just say I had to leave the theatre a few times. What little I did get to see I enjoyed.

Steve Carell was hilarious as the voice of Gru.  His halfway Russian slash Hungarian accent was just as funny now as it was in the first movie. The plot was a little all over the place sometime, but I like that the little girls he adopted in the first one were just as present in this sequel if not more. As always I will not disclose too much information, but  Gru found himself a love interest, Shannon, played by the hilarious Kristen Schaal. I think it completes his family and wraps up any loose ends. If there is a third one I'm betting it will have more children in it lol.

There were so many touching moments that I appreciated, like when the youngest little girl had to do an assignment for Mother's Day only she couldn't relate to what the other children experienced with their mothers because she didn't have one. That's when Gru realized what was missing in their family. That's a topic that's sensitive and very relevant in our society. It touches on adoption and blended families two VERY relevant social issues. I believe that's very important. Although you want to keep the children's interest with bright colors and physicality and silly faces, a little substance certainly doesn't hurt! This movie brings all that to the table! Check out the previews below and lemme know what you think!

Have you seen the movie? Do you plan to have movie night with  your family soon? I wanna hear it all :)

America is NOT the Fattest Country Anymore!?!?

Howdy Hi! (((in my Mr. Hanky voice)))

Overweight women walk along a street in Mexico City (© APF/Getty Images)

SOOOO! Yes you saw right! I read this article on MSN like "huh'? I did some more reading on this and, welp, its pretty much self explanatory. We are no longer the fattest country, coming in a close second to Mexico.  Its not such a big deal except for the fact its pretty much Americas fault. Well it seems that way to me. Healthier and organic food costs are steadily rising, junk foods are becoming cheaper and widely distributed, American brand fast food restaurants are being built day by day and more and more Mexican families are frying things left and right. Definitely sounds familiar.

Why is Mexico falling in line behind big ol' fat ass America??? Are other countries following the same trend? I have much more research to do. What do you know??? Have you read any articles like this one, what did it say???

Post below, lemme know what you think!

Family Movie Night: Keeping the Tradition Going!

Hey Guys!
This post is about a topic very close to my heart. MOVIE NIGHT! lol Yes family movie night gals!!! This used to be a sacred thing in my household as a child. My Dad used to take me and my favorite cousin to Chuck E. Cheese and the movies all the time. Of course we went other places often, but these two places were our fave. My Dad is like every one's favorite uncle. He takes the kids out for ice cream and Chuck E. Cheese and all that! He's super nice and more than generous. A real gem bc not even a quarter of the black men I have come in contact with do half as much as my father. I commend him and although he and my mother got divorced when I was very young, he has been there for real y'all.

(((claps loud for my Poppa)))

Anyhoo, last weekend we went to the movies with the kids and my sissy and her baby boy, Caiden. We have also done movies as a family in the house on many occasion. I got to thinking "hmmmmmmm... maybe we can make this a habit and create a tradition like when I was small".....

LIGHT BULB! Of course!

Okay, so I will be doing little mini recaps of the night each week and giving my take on the family oriented movie that we all saw.  This past Saturday we saw Monsters University (see preview below).  Such a good prequel to the first. I especially like that the ending wasn't the cookie cutter, expected happy ending, but a realistic take on what you can do if "Plan A" in your life falls through. Disney did good with this one! Mike and Sully really pulled together at the end and made their dreams come true with hard work and dedication (won't give it away lol). Also the new, funny characters were cute and all around lovable. My favorite was the older guy who was a sales rep (his name escapes me). He was an older monster who didn't look very scary, so he used his brain to make a living until he was downsized and went back to school to learn a new trade. Very relevant and realistic take on a cartoon character. The colors were bright and you know it was funny! A++

Sometimes there may not be a family oriented movie in theatres so we may rent one and do home movie night! And some movies maybe older ones from when I was little! This will be great. (claps in excitement) Now that I have the free time (with the broken ankle and all, will post about that topic later) I will spend it in the best ways possible and what better way than spending it with my Dad and his grand babies, my kids! :)

'Til next week!
